Did you know? Improved FASD Legislation Passed

September 03, 2009

Last year, MOFAS worked closely with policy makers, community partners and parent advocates to improve legislation regarding human services.  We proved that working together we can impact policy in Minnesota.

What changed?

The definition of services available under medical assistance for disabled children’s services now includes Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder as a “related condition.”

Who will benefit from this legislation?

Parents will be more supported by state systems because the door has been opened to take a second look at FASD as a lifelong and valid condition.

Social workers will have an increased awareness of FASD and understanding that it is a lifetime disability that meets criteria for appropriate supports.

Community based agencies, as well as social workers, will understand that the quality of life for individuals with FASD could be greatly improved by services such as personal care assistance, respite care, transitional services and assistance in transportation.
